A few years ago, Australia wine regions were largely unknown within North America. Today, many people have begun exploring this part of the world.

Approximately five years ago, a popular chardonnay that had a Jacob’s Creek label on it began to sell like made throughout North America. As soon as people began to taste this wine, they began to write about it. The moment that the first critic praised wines from Australia, people around the world began to recognize them. Now, most people have had at least a few bottles from this area, and the wines within this part of the world are really starting to pick up. You will find that the numerous Australia wine regions are really quite different from one another once you delve into them.

Interestingly, the wines that are sold throughout North American from this part of the world are generally not the best wines that Australia produces. While this is true of most countries, we hardly see any wines from this area that are truly above par. However, this does not mean that exceptional wines do not exist. Rather, it only means that the large vineyards are able to send their wines to North America. Thus, if you are able to visit Australia you will have a much better idea regarding the taste of the grapes grown there. Now, let’s get on with those specifics...

The Australia wine regions include: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. Within each of these areas are subcategories that include numerous towns and villages that produce wine. The Australian system is somewhat confusing given the fact that it is not entirely organized. Still, you must realize that the wines from this region are still rather young as far as the world is concerned. Unlike France or Italy, Australia has not been producing wine for many generations.

Is Australia capable of producing wines that will stand up to Chateauneuf du Pape and Bordeaux? Well, nobody can tell for sure. Still, the future of these wines looks rather bright as you may be able to tell from all the interest in this area lately.

If you want to take a bit of a gamble, purchase some bottles from various Australia wine regions, and hang on to them for a few years. Who knows – the bottles that you collect today just may be worth something tomorrow.
